CBS 3 Springfield - WSHMFuel cell vehicles investigated for military use

ATLANTA (CNN) - The Combined States Army is looking at hydrogen fuel cell vehicles hoping that sometime in the mean future they'll play an important military role, maybe even on the battlefield.

The military has been looking at option fuels like this because the difficulty, expense and danger of securing oil and gasoline supplies among other reasons.

Hydrogen nutrition cells, in particular, seem promising because of their design flexibility, said Primary General Roger Matthews, Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army Pacific.

Opposite from an ordinary car's engine and transmission, fuel cells and batteries can take many shapes and be arranged inside the vehicle in a number of different ways.

That allows for vehicles to be heartier designed for different roles, whether for carrying people, cargo or other duties, he said.

For now, the U.S. is testing a division of 16 General Motors fuel cell vehicles in Hawaii. They run on compressed hydrogen gas and the hydrogen is combined in a food cell with oxygen from the air  in a process that generates energy. The only exhaust the vehicles produce is water vapor.

Why isn't the use of hydrogen gas used for internal combustion ...

Hydrogen costs much more to assemble. It takes the commensurate of 10 gallons of gasoline either in coal or some other provocation to show a one gallon of of a piece hydrogen fuel. Then you have the dominant facer in that hydrogen fueled vehicles overdo not be sensible vapor which is the only staunch greenhouse gas increasing limited atmosphere warming due as swimming pools and other humidity increasers do.

Because there is no commencement of unaffected hydrogen in the superb. Most hydrogen reach-me-down today is made from fundamental gas, but that takes drive to do and is still a fossil sustain based dynamism. Using fervency to split top molecules into hydrogen and oxygen atoms takes a LOT of tenseness, more than could be generated by flaming the hydrogen in an mechanism turning a generator.

Volumetric vigour density. Compressed hydrogen gas at 150 bar which is about 2,200 psi only has 405 WH/l whereas gasoline has over 9,000 WH/l. Even juice hydrogen only has 2,600 WH/l, a gallon of gasoline indeed has more hydrogen then a gallon of liquefied hydrogen....
