Spartanburg road closed Monday to clean up spilled hydrogen peroxide
Croft Fire Be sure of Chief Lewis Hayes said the driver was transporting hydrogen peroxide from a Charlotte, N.C., swiftness to Spartanburg when a valve in the tanker malfunctioned, causing the solution to slop when the truck stopped. The driver had gotten off of Interstate 85 and drove along indirect roads through Converse when the solution pooled in several different locations before the driver noticed it, Hayes said.
The key spilled in several locations along the route, but the largest amount spilled on Dogwood Combine Road off South Pine Street, Hayes said.
The working, which is completely soluble with water, was a higher concentration than available in medicine stores, but didn’t pose a public threat, the chief said.
Crews closed a part of the road from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. while the solution was diluted, he said.
The state Department of Haleness and Environmental Control and chemists from the company where the solution was manufactured were notified, he said.
