does hygrogen peroxide hurt your hair?

I was on a website and it said that lemon pith and hydrogen peroxide can make your hair lighter. I want to try this but i dont grasp if it is safe. I went in my kitchen and looked for lemon liquid but i had none so i might use peroxide.
