What is the real truth about drugs and alcohol?

Before entering lavish school my grandfather warned me about the druggies there and how i should stay away from them and he said drugs would breakdown my life if i ever got involved in them.
Your original question mentions alcohol but you don't say anything about it after that, so I thought I'd mention it for you.
I grew up with an calumnious alcoholic father. I watched him beat my mother and sister (he never touched me, I don't understand why).
